Mary must have had some interest in this land, perhaps a tax deed. The $50 would not be enough to purchase the 40 acres, even at that time.

Back to the old Atlas1. This land is in the second tier of sections in Greenwood township, 8 miles or so from the Burdick residence on the Greenwood/Colfax township line. This map section does not show the land the Burdicks occupied, and the other map sections in the series do not show this land.

I don’t have a record of how George acquired this land, I just have missed that deed. Another possibility is that it was recorded when Wexford was attached to Brown County, or Missaukee county for administrative purposes.

Once again, I have based my drawing on the old atlas1 of Wexford County; the land transferred is outlined in green.

Burdick purchased interest in the first piece of land in a tax sale on the deed I have previously described, which is recorded in Liber 13, page 184 of Wexford County, Michigan deeds. George Burdick and John Fenton purchased the second piece on a deed recorded in Liber 14, Page 617. George only sold 1/2 interest to N. A. Reynolds, since he only owned 1/2 interest. After this transaction, N. A. Reynolds and John Fenton shared interest in that piece.

A little more about the relationship between Erasmus Abbott, N.A. Reynolds, George W. Burdick, and Mary Jane Abbott.

Orson Abbott and Nancy Hughson had a family of at least 5 children, of those, these have connections to these land records.

Phoebe, born about 1830-1835 married Norman Reynolds, N. A. Reynolds was their son. Mary Jane, born 1836, married George W. Burdick. Erasmus, born June 1838, married twice and lived for quite some time in Wexford County.

Honoring My Mother

Mother left us for a better place on June 6, 2007. I was fine for a while, and the not fine, and then fine. I rode the roller coaster of life and found joy in daily routine, family and friends, my garden and my genealogical research. A year ago today we buried her ashes at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

In cases where a graveside service is included after a funeral, the death, services and some closure follow each other closely. In this case, more than a year after her death, I had no desire to add another “sad about Mom day” to my calendar. So when S-Dad decided it was time to bury her, I suggested her birthday. It is fitting, Mother loved birthdays and all the fuss that she supposed needed to be included.

I made my first trip up to the cemetery in the spring, and took photos as I have with all the graves I visit. I was later suspired to find a memorial for her on Find-a-Grave, and asked that it be transferred to me.

Today, Papa and I will place a memento on her grave, and pause to remember all Mom was, and did for us.

On the deed I described in this post, John Fenton purchased this piece of land from George Burdick. I believe that John and Susie may have moved to another location in Colfax, or in to Manton.

In the old 1889 Atlas1, the land is show as owned by George Burdick.

Burdick Family Land Records, Wexford County, Greenwood Township Property

I have noticed that the next four deeds also refer to the same land as the one recorded in liber 9 page 332. This is another circumstance where an illustration will help me, and maybe it will make it easier for you, too.

So, the verdict is (drum roll, please): Mary Jane Burdick purchased whatever interest William Backus had in these two pieces of property. It would appear to have been his initial investment and some property taxes on some pieces. He may have moved on to Chicago, or perhaps never resided in Michigan and purchased the property as an investment. But, for whatever reason, he was behind on his taxes.

All of these deeds must have given Mary a title to the property, since she is shown as an owner in the 1889 Atlas.1 You can see a diagram that I pieced together below, which shows Greenwood Township on the top, and Colfax Township on the bottom of a dashed line. The land marked in Colfax Township is the first land George Burdick purchased in Colfax from Erasmus Abbott. The property in Greenwood is that covered by the deeds listed above.
