Winnie Kaiser Yearnd Wedding Book – 1

This entry is part 1 of 10 in the series Winnie Kaiser Yearnd Wedding Book

I have been lucky enough to inherit my grandparents wedding register book. Although both of my grandparents were involved in the wedding, I think of this as my grandmother’s book. This is because I never knew my grandfather, who was died before I was born. I have memories of visiting my grandmother, I called Sweetie. She passed away on December 11, 1957 when I was exactly six years and one month old. The other significant thing about December 11 is that our youngest daughter was born on that day. Here is the cover of the book.

You may enlarge the images by clicking on them, if you need to. I believe my grandmother wroth this, but I can’t be sure. Dr. A. W. Johnstone was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Cadillac, Wexford, Michigan.

E.G. Rice and Mildred Rice, the witnesses to the marriage, were and aunt and uncle of Winnie. Amelia “Millie” Kaiser was the youngest child of William Kaiser, 1837-1909, and Elizabeth Long, 1834-1921, and a sibling of Winnie’s father, William Kaiser, 1862-1940.

Hamilton Cemetery, Edgewood, Gratiot County, Michigan

This entry is part 58 of 60 in the series Cemeteries

This cemetery is south of M-46 and Breckenridge. We got there by following Barry Road south from M-46. The mile roads are named for presidents, so we cruised by Jackson, Lincoln, Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler and Polk roads, before the pattern was broken by St. Charles Road. I have no idea what it is named for. One mile south of St. Charles the pattern continues, Washington, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan…. The cemetery is just south of the intersection of Washington and Barry Road, on the east side of Berry road.

The Peet and Gross families were residents of this area, and are related to our son-in-law.

The Gross families are descended from Jonah Gross, born in Enfield (historical), Hampshire County, Massachusetts, and in Oakland County, Michigan by 1831, perhaps earlier.

An older stone marks the grave of Alfred A. Gross, 1857-1894, a son of Jonah and his first wife, Harriet Harwood. A transcription of the cemetery has this as Gross, unknown.
gross unknown

I did a little work on it, and am satisfied that this was placed at the death of Alfred A. Gross. If you look at the enlarged image, the 1874 and the A. Gross are very clear. and you can see the outline of the Alfred.
alfred for sure

An more modern marker was apparently placed later, perhaps when Rhoda passed away. Alfred A., 1827-1894 & Rhoda (Dayton) Gross, 1841-1930, were S-in-L’s 3rd great-grandparents.

This cemetery is just west of US 131, about 2 20 miles south of Kalkaska. Walton Junction is a ghost town, little remains of the once thriving logging community. I consulted a book of cemetery transcriptions at the library in Kalkaska, which listed lot

A lot was listed on the index as that of containing burials for Zachariah C. Smith and his wife Harriet Filson Smith. No stones visible, but this planter on the lot.

Lot 3 was indexed as containing burials for several Smith family members, including Zachariah C. Smith and his wife Harriet Filson Smith. No stones visible, but this planter on the lot. Zachariah and Harriet were the parents of Hiram Smith.

Chartiers Cemetery, Carnegie, Pennsylvania

This entry is part 56 of 60 in the series Cemeteries

In July, 2007, Papa and I spent a week in Pennsylvania, searching for information on his elusive Warren ancestors. One day, we drove south through Pittsburgh to this very large cemetery where some of his ancestors are buried.

I wrote a letter to this cemetery in April, 2001, inquiring about Papa’s ancestors, James and Emily (Leach) Cowling. The cemetery replied as follows: The only information given was they were removed from another cemetery and a stone with names on were put in Sec B range 14, lot 41 grave 1…..(the) date died Oct 15, 1910 was listed as both.

The Morris lot looked like this when we arrived that hot July day in 2007. The second marker of four in a row was tipped, and it appeared that a marker might be missing in the front. You can see the lot marker identifying the lot as owned by the Morris family. The lot is located on the side of a very steep hill.

First on the left, back row: James and Emily (Leach) Cowling Papa’s second great-grandparents.

The tipped stone, second from the left marked the grave of Walter Morris, 1946-1911.

Walter’s wife’s grave is the third from the left, Mary Ethel Ella Cowling,1846-1921, a daughter of James and Emily Cowling.

The fourth grave is Robert James Morris, 1869-1898.

In the front row, the unmarked space, then Charles Weaver Morris, 1885-1946.

Michael & Ellen Judge RIP

Although my cousin relates that her brothers accompanied the body of their father, Bernard Long, to Canada for burial in this cemetery with is wife, I could not see any marking on the gravestone noting his burial here. Bernard Long died 27 February 1913 in Cadillac, Wexford, Michigan, where he resided near his children after his wife’s death.

Ellen Judge was the youngest child of Lucy Riley and Bernard Long; her children who are buried here were Bernard and Lucy’s grandchildren.

I found a transcription for this cemetery in the library at Goderich, Ontario. Since it was not too far out of my way as I traveled to the cemetery where some of my closer relatives were buried, I stopped.

The burials of interest to me here are related to my Long ancestors. John Long, 1858-1927 was my first cousin, three times removed. His father, also named John Long was a brother of my 2nd great-grandmother Elizabeth Long. John’s branch of the family remained in Ontario.

On large monument marks the final resting place of John Long, his wife and their daughter.

Joseph Long, 1864-1939 and wife Catherine (Russell) Long 1866-1941. Joseph was a brother of John, so he was also my first cousin, three times removed. You can see my car in this photo, showing how close to the highway these graves are.

Mary Long, 1862-1917, wife of Samuel Wilton. Mary’s parents were John Long and Mary Frilch, according to her death record. She was a sibling of the John and Joseph buried on this lot.

W. Alfred Birtles and wife Marguerite J. Wilton. Marguerite Jeanette Wilton was the daughter of Samuel Wilton and Mary Anne Long according to her birth record.

The remaining burials in proximity to those above appear to be persons related to my cousins.

These four graves are near a large tree, and nearly 40 years ago, when I first saw them, two of the stones were being raised by the roots of the tree. One year when we returned, the stones had been moved away from the tree. The four markers are in close proximity to each other.
