Belle (Lamunion) and Charlie Tinker. Belle and Charlie married in 1914. Her grandchildren say, “Grandma and Charlie”. I’ll have to ask M-in-L the dog’s name. I forgot it.

This entry is part 57 of 60 in the series Cemeteries

This cemetery is just west of US 131, about 2 20 miles south of Kalkaska. Walton Junction is a ghost town, little remains of the once thriving logging community. I consulted a book of cemetery transcriptions at the library in Kalkaska, which listed lot

A lot was listed on the index as that of containing burials for Zachariah C. Smith and his wife Harriet Filson Smith. No stones visible, but this planter on the lot.

Lot 3 was indexed as containing burials for several Smith family members, including Zachariah C. Smith and his wife Harriet Filson Smith. No stones visible, but this planter on the lot. Zachariah and Harriet were the parents of Hiram Smith.

Read about this series of posts, regarding items in a box originally owned by Belle (Lamunion) Fellows Tinker here. The cast of characters is located here. And, there is an accounting of people about whom I have little information here.

The numbering of these posts had been modified to signify that I am posting items from my archival book three, a three precedes the item number.

3-62 is a photo of Henry Smith, son of Eunice Fellows and husband Hiram Smith.

3-62

3-106 is badly faded, but is unmistakably of Henry Smith.

3-106

3-104 is a four generation photo. Belle’s daughter, Eunice Fellows Smith, and her son Henry are standing.
Belle is holding a baby. Charlie Tinker can be seen sitting on the ground to the right.

3-104

Henry Z. Smith, 1918-1986 married Esther M. Marquart. Their first child, David Henry Smith was born in 1946 and passed away in 1983. I believe, but am not completely certain, that David is the baby Belle is holding.

Sorry you’re Ill

This comes to express
A VOLUME OF GOOD WISHES
for your early
and complete recovery

Geo just got home and told me about
you being sick. Hi, Eunice, Henry & wife & babe was here yesterday but did
not say as you was bad off. Let us
know how you are and if there is
anything we can do you you. We
will be glad to help, Love Edna

Edna Fellows Fenton seemed worried about her mother. Henry and Esther Smith’s oldest son, David was born 28 January 1946, just days after Charlie Tinker passed away on 5 January of the same year. If Henry & wife visited with a “babe” and not “children” it was likely between Charlie’s death and Belle’s death, which occurred in August, 1948. I would guess that Belle was ill in late spring or early summer of 1946.

Belle’s brother, George Lamunion passed away years earlier, in 1932. So the George Edna referred to was probably her son, George Fenton. He was married and living in in Allegan county at this time, so the must have been “home” visiting. Perhaps he stopped at his grandmother’s on the way to his parents home and found her ill.

With Love to [Grand] Mother
on her day

2-14b

[To a loving sweet Mother and Grandmother.]

Here’s a happy greeting, [Grand-] Mother
And an extra word of cheer,
For the home
you’ve made so happy,
And toe home-ties
kept so dear!

Your loving grandchildren
Henry & Esther

There are quite a number of communications from Henry Z. Smith to his grandmother in the collection.  This one was apparently written after Henry’s marriage to Esther.  Esther Marquart Smith was a wonderful, loving lady and it does not surprise that if she was the writer, that she took the time to personalize this card and send a message.

This card was either hand delivered, or sent in an envelope. Henry Z. Smith, 1918-1936 was faithful about writing to his grandparents. Henry’s parents were Belle’s daughter Eunice Fellows and her husband Hiram Smith.

Dear Folks
will be looking
for you for
Christmas
from
Eunice

This is the third card in the collection addressed to Belle in Paris, Michigan. The others are numbers 35 and 92. I looked back, and would guess that Charlie was working in the Paris area, either on road construction or logging during 1929. I would guess the date of this card as either 1928 or 1928.

ROCK ISLAND DEPOT, TOPEKA, KAN–Topeka is one of the large railway centers of the southwest, being entered by four of the principal western railroads. There are also large railway shops in the capital city of Kansas.

There are photos of a bridge among the items in the box. One of Papa’s uncles remembers that Charlie worked on the bridge, which was north of Manton. I’m not sure if it was a far north as Walton, but it seems that Belle and Charlie were at Walton for some reason, and Hiram and Eunice were doing some work on Belle’s land in Charlie’s absence.

Belle’s daughter Eunice and her husband Hiram Smith lived in or near Fife Lake during this period. “Uncle Geo” would have been George Lamunion, Belle’s brother.
