This entry is part 76 of 99 in the series Deeds in the Family

I am posting information gleaned from land records in the areas where our family’s ancestors resided. You can read more about this project in the overview . This group pertain to Papa’s Fellows ancestors who resided in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Date: 12 Aug 1865
Liber: 14
Page: 113
Location: Newaygo Co., MI
Grantor: Joel B. Fellows of Clyde, Sandusky Co., OH
Grantee: Peter J. Fellows of the same place
Witnesses: A.H. Giddings, W. Parsons
Type of deed: Warranty
Rec’d and recording: 20 April 1872
Clerk/registrar: Parsons
Location of land: Newaygo
Consideration: $500
Notes:
Description: W 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 14, T11N R13W

I do not know when Joel B. Fellows obtained this land, and I am also not sure of the relationship of Joel B. Fellows with Henry H. (b ca 1839), Erastus G.(b ca 1835)., and Peter J. (b ca 1840) I suspect that he was an uncle, but that is based on his age in relation to them, and the fact that some of the orphans of Erastus Fellows (d. 1843) lived in the same household as Joel in 1850. Henry H, our ancestor, was the son of Erastus G., b. ca 1835.

The location of this land is illustrated in relationship to the other deeds I have analyzed for these families, on the Ashland Township map from the old Newaygo County Atlas1. The older deeds, marked in blue on the map are are:

  1. W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec 13 T11N R13W purchased by Erastus G. Fellows on 14 July 1859.
  2. NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 24 T11N R13W purchased by Henry H. Fellows (b. ca 1839), on 10 Dec 1861, recorded in 1876.
  3. W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec 13 T11N R13W by Joel B. Fellows (b. ca 1820) on 4 March 1867 from the estate of Erastus G. Fellows, executor Henry H. Fellows (b. ca 1839) on 4 March 1867.

The land sold by Joel to Peter is marked in red on the map.  You can see a larger version by clicking on the thumbnail.

This cemetery is just inside the city limits on the south. It is on the west side of U.S. 131 (also Mitchell Street) as you enter the town.

This is one of two cemeteries that a cousin and I visited in 2002. She is a Long descendent, and some of these graves are people who are unrelated to “my” family; they are probably related to her.

All underlined names are linked to photos. Use your browser’s back button after viewing a picture.

Long

Michael P. Long, 1879-1952, and wife Emma Martell Long, 1883-1947

Also on this lot, Gladys Marie Long, 1909-1910, died at age 11 months, no marker.

We reviewed the lot card for this lot in the St. Ann Church records. Bernard J. Long is listed as the owner of this lot.

Long

Bernard Joseph Long, 1876-1954 and his wife Valeria Thibeaut Long, 1882-1959. Bernard Joseph was a nephew of my 2nd great-grandmother, Elizabeth Long Kaiser, and my first cousin, 3 times removed.

Rosalie, 1914-1914

Margarete Long, 1903-1907

Mitchell

Della Thibeaut

Pomeroy

Beverly Ann, 12/5/1929 age 3 weeks, according to the cemetery lot card. It is impossible to tell if the date is a burial date or a death date.

Eugene Francis, 11/11/1928, age 1 month according to the cemetery lot card. Again, I could not tell if the date was a burial date or a death date.

Bernard Long, with a date of 27 February 1913 is also listed on the front of the lot card, but not on the back, which shows the grave locations. Bernard Long, also known as Benjamin, died on 27 February 1913 in Cadillac, Wexford, Michigan. He was my cousin’s grandfather, my 2nd great grand-uncle. My cousin related that her mother said the family had promised him he would be buried with his wife in Ontario, Canada when they convinced him to come to Cadillac, Michigan after she died.

Hot and cold running water would have been quite a luxury in rural northern Michigan in 1930. I’m pretty sure that most families made due with a pump, bucket and a washtub.

Sandusky, Michigan is located in Sanilac County, in the in Michigan’s thumb. If you check out the City’s website, you can see another image of McDonalds Hotel, by watching the “Memories of Yesterday” photo tour. Go ahead, it only takes a minute, and it’s fun…

As for the sender of this card, I haven’t a clue.
