fellows frank memorial card

Frank A. Fellows was born in Grant, Newaygo County, Michigan, according to his birth record. He passed away at Mercy Hospital, Cadillac, Michigan as the result of a car-train accident.

Uncle Frank was Papa’s great-uncle; the youngest sibling in the family of Belle Lamunion and Henry H. Fellows, and the only son to survive to adulthood.

I have previously written a number of posts mentioning Uncle Frank.

I am sharing funeral cards on Friday, following a Facebook meme which you an see here.

This deed states, “Reserving all crops now in the ground that can be harvested before 1 November 1896 and possession of the house until 1 November 1896.”

This appears to be when Henry and Belle left Newaygo County and headed north. They would have been following the work available in the lumber woods. Although the family farmed, the men also worked in the woods in the winter. Belle and Henry and their children appear on the 1900 census of Orange Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan in the home of George McAfee. Henry was a “hired man”, and Belle and their oldest daughter Bertha are listed as servants. The other children who were old enough are “attending school.”

The location of this land is illustrated on the Ashland Township map from the old Newaygo County Atlas1 . Click thumbnail if you wish to enlarge the map.

Type of deed: Warranty
Rec’d and recording: 4 Oct 1882
Clerk/registrar: Taylor
Location of land: Ashland, Newaygo, MI

Description:

The land conveyed was: All of the E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section 13, T11N R13W that is south of the state road running through said land except a strip on the south end starting at the SW corner and running north 20 rods and 4 feet, then east to the Newaygo & Lake Shore RR, then on the line of the RR S 20 rods and 4 ft., then west to the start. This is the land which Henry H. (b ca 1859) purchased from his uncle, also Henry H. (b. ca 1839) just after the younger Henry turned 21.

I do not know which Joel B. Fellows purchased this land from the younger Henry H. Fellows. There is evidence two men by that name resided in Newaygo County. At the time of the 1880 census, Joel Fellows, the younger brother of Henry H. Fellows “Jr.”, was enumerated as a boarder, “Works in Woods” in Alleyton, Newaygo Co., MI. This younger Joel and the younger Henry were sons of Erastus G. Fellows and Mary Scofield. This Joel was born 9 October 1860, according the his father’s pension file, and would have been over 21 and old enough to purchase land in April, 1882.

Also on the 1880 census, the following listing appears in Ashland in the home of James M. Britton, family 22, dwelling 22: Fellows, J.B., white, male, 58, boarding, single, no occupation, born New York, both parents born Connecticut. This man may be the same Joel who purchased property from the estate of Erastus G. Fellows, the father of the younger Joel. He also appears on the 1884 census of Newaygo County, and his death is recorded in Ashland Township, Newaygo County, MI 21 January, 1892.

I will need to make a very thorough review of the land records and probate records to determine which Joel purchased this land.

The location of this land is illustrated on the Ashland Township map from the old Newaygo County Atlas1.

I have not discovered the deed which shows Henry H. (b ca 1839) purchasing this land. However, on the 1880 atlas he si shown as the owner of the SW 1/4 of the piece. Once again, Henry’s nephew is listed as, Henry H. Fellows, Jr.”.

I have more than a passing interest in this deed, which conveys land between the older Henry Fellows and the younger one. In this case, the Jr., does mean younger, not, “My son with the same name”.

Henry Fellows purchased this land the day after he turned 21 years of age. Also, it is interesting that Henry Fellows and Belle Lamunion were married on 16 August 1879, just a few days after Henry purchased this property from his uncle.
