Dear Mother
Recived your letter
Today Hie has
Been plowing
We sure have
Had a nice spring
Eunice

Eunice and Hiram Smith were Belle’s daughter and son-in-law. Charlie Tinker did travel around working on roads, and also in the woods, perhaps he had traveled to Escanaba to work. April seems a little early to be plowing in northwestern lower Michigan; it must have been an early spring.

Number 33 is a cute card, a man in a dog house, while the dog looks on from the end of a rope. “Having a “Doggone” Good Time Here!”

Dear Grandfolks:
I’min the army now. Ill write from Fort Custer
Let the folks know
your grandson
Henry Smith

33b

Wow! Can you imagine entering the army, and then letting your parents know by asking your grandparents to tell them? Perhaps everyone already knew why Henry left, and he had time or money to send only one card.

Henry Z. Smith was born in 1918, the son of Eunice Fellows and Hiram A. Smith. He was their only living child, a daughter died as an infant.

Henry ended up living in Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan; near his family, after his service.

This entry is part 9 of 342 in the series Belle's Box

You can read about Belle Lamunion, 1864-1848, and her amazing box of family memories here. Belle married Henry H Fellows, 1858-1905 in 1879 in Ashland Township, Newaygo County, Michigan.

This series of posts will center around the approximately 405 items in the box which are in my possession. I scanned the items one at at time as they were picked up from the box, in no particular order; and so the scans are not arranged by date or any other method. The posts will be numbered according to the order of the scanned item in my files. It may be that the posts will not appear in number order, especially if extra investigation is needed regarding a given item. So, just to be clear, the cards, clippings, photos and other items that were in the box will be described one at a time, and titled with the file number of the item’s scan.

You can read about the characters whose names appear in the box in Cast of Characters . If you are related to this family, please contact me.

This card is addressed to Mrs. Belle Tinker, Escanaba, Mich. I can’t read the postmark, other than 9 a.m. The front: “A very Happy Birthday with every kind wish for your continued success and happiness.”

Dear ____ We are all alive and fine. Ross work up to camp for a while untill (sic) the Rye is ready to cut. Eunice and Hi (sic) were here yesterday. uncle Geo was here last night Laura has piece your block box next time Hope you are OK

Edna

“uncle Geo” was George Lamunion, Belle’s brother. Edna and Ross Fenton, and Eunice and Hi Smith were two of her daughters and their husbands. This card had to be sent after the date of Belle’s marriage to Charlie Tinker in 1913. I have no idea why Belle was in Escanaba. The “camp” that Ross Fenton was working at would be one of the lumber camps in the area.
