MERRY CHRISTMAS

2-58b

May you find cheer
at Christmastime
and may joys in
the New Year

2-58c

Dear ones -. We have quite a
lot of snow here. I have been in
bed a few days with bad cold
or flu. I am sitting up some
today but not dressed.
I heard about two weeks ago
that Ida Jefferies was still in
the hospital. She is in the
Crispe hospital at Plainwell,
Mich. Laila was down last
week end and stayed with us.
Len & I will have Christmas
dinner with some friends of
ours here in G.R.
Love Len, Huldah

Len and Huldah (Carter) Terwilliger resided in Grand Rapids. Ida Jefferies sent some of the items; it seems that the connection Belle had with Ida was a from her previous home in Newaygo County Michigan.

Burk and Laila

The spelling of Laila’s name is corrected on the printed card. I guess it was to late to return them and have them re-printed when the mistake was discovered. Laila Carter, the daughter of Andrew and Emily (Lamunion) Carter, was Belle’s niece.

As you enter the Birthday gate
today
May you find the best of
health and cheer.
The kind that will linger
on and on.
Through many a happy year.

Mother & Laila

I find it interesting the way this card is signed. Andrew Jackson Carter died in 1942, and Emily Lamunion Carter in 1945. Although Laila Carter married in 1918, her husband Warren Burke Plotts is not acknowledged in the signature of the card. It seems as if Laila was maintaining connections with family on behalf of her mother.

Belle’s niece, Laila Carter, graduated in this class, which had thirteen members. Laila was a daughter of Andrew and Emily (Lamunion) Carter.  The family resided in Ashland Township, so it is likely that Lalia had to board with a family in Newaygo to attend school.  It was not uncommon for rural girls to board “in town” in order to attend high school.
I find the class motto interesting, “Not by Dream, but by the Hammer and Forge”. I guess this was a hard working bunch.
