Dear friend,

It is nice weather here just
fine for the fair
I don’t think I will
go. expect you will
have a go time
a Cadillac
Hope to hear from
you soon

your friend
Olia Reed

It looks like Olia Reed was forwarding mail to Belle, and perhaps to her mother who may have lived near Belle in Wexford County, or been visiting in the area.

In the period from 1900-1920, several women who might be this Olive/Olia Reed/Reid/Read show up on various census in west Michigan. Perhaps later items will reveal more clues about her identy.

As is the case with many of these cards, identifying who the sender might be is pretty much impossible without more clues.

You can read more at in the book.

Item 34 has a petty vase of yellow roses on the front.

“SUNSHINE
Some friendly breeze my message take
unto my friend and in its wake
May sunshine be the cheerful guide
Through happy days clear-blue o’er-skied. ”

Number 515 printed lower right corner on front.

34f

The card is addressed to:
Mrs C Tinker
Mesick Mich

The card carries a 1 cent stamp, and is post marked Manton, Feb, but the year and day are illegible.

34b

Dear Friend Mrs
Tinker I have my
Block done let me
know what you are
going to do next Love

Jessie B

Since the card is addressed to Belle after her marriage to Charlie Tinker, if must have been sent after 15 July 1913, their marriage date. Since postcards were 1 cent postage from 1898 until 1 January 1952, the denomination of the postage doesn’t help.  Once again, I’m hoping for more clues!

Hope you are
fine Little George is home
expect my folks home next
Sat or in next
week some time
I received your letter
fine But have not answered it
yet so will with
this card
Rachel

35b

Rachel Belle Burgess, was a granddaughter of Belle. Rachel would have been 13 when this card was written. My mother-in-law remembered that Charlie would go out of town to work in the winter. She thought they might have been working on US 131 at while at Paris, Michigan at this time.

I don’t know who Rachel was referring to by “little George”, but it may have been her cousin, George Emerson Fenton, who would have been about 17 when this card was written. “Big” George would probably be George W. Lamunion, Belle’s brother.

From the Letherby Family

The family of Lester F and Jennie Letherby resided in Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan at the time of the 1920 and 1930 censuses. Lester was 57 in 1920, so may have passed away before August, 1948 when Belle died.
