Belle’s Box – 46

September 15th, 2008 | Posted by Granny Pam in Papa's Ancestors - (0 Comments)
This entry is part 21 of 342 in the series Belle's Box

Read about this series of posts, regarding items in a box originally owned by Belle (Lamunion) Fellows Tinker here. The cast of characters is located here. And, there is an accounting of people about whom I have little information here.

Item 46 is a birthday card. It is a postcard, but it wasn’t mailed. The card is fancy, the color seems almost painted on.

46f

To Mrs Tinker

from Alice and Ester Schutte

We wish you a happy Birthday and many returns of the day

46b

The Schutte family were neighbors of Belle’s in Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan.

This is a Christmas card, which must have been mailed in an envelope.

Another mystery. A check of the census at Ancestry.com shows several William Reardons with Michigan residences or birthplaces. But none living near Belle’s home.

Bessie arrived a hospital in good condition
will let you know again

Elgie

Bessie Ann Lamunion was the daughter of Merritt “Scott” Lamunion and his wife Adelia Widger, and a niece of Belle.

Bessie’s second husband, Elgie Stewart, must have written this card after taking his wife to the hospital, probably in Cadillac, but possibly Traverse City.

Bessie and Elgie were married 13 March 1910, and Elgie died on 9 March 1939. Since Belle married Charley Tinker 15 July 1913, this card was likely written between March 1910 and July, 1913.

Dear Friends,

I will drop you a card and extend to you, our heart felt thanks for your kindness towards us during our bereavement.

Yours Truly,

M???????

The card is written in some kind of green pen. None of the tricks I’ve tired in photo shop, or any other program reveal who the signer might be.

A bright and happy Christmas Season
and all good wishes for the
coming year

Mr and Mrs Wm Reardon

There were several William Reardon’s in Michigan between 1900 and 1930, but none in Newaygo, Kent or Wexford County. Perhaps another card or clue will point me to this family and it’s relationship with Belle.

For I wish you a rousing good year
clear through.”

Addressed to Mr’s C. Tinker. This must have been hand delivered, there is no sign of a stamp or post mark.

Many Happy Birthdays
Mr & Mr’s C. Jacobs

23f

There is a Jacobs family residing in Antioch Township which is listed on the 1920 and 1930 census. There is one child, with the first initial of C, Clarence, age 14 on the 1930 census.

Belle lived in the area until her death in August, 1948, so it is possible that this card was from Clarence and his wife. Or not.

Dear Grandfolks:
I’min the army now. Ill write from Fort Custer
Let the folks know
your grandson
Henry Smith

33b

Wow! Can you imagine entering the army, and then letting your parents know by asking your grandparents to tell them? Perhaps everyone already knew why Henry left, and he had time or money to send only one card.

Henry Z. Smith was born in 1918, the son of Eunice Fellows and Hiram A. Smith. He was their only living child, a daughter died as an infant.

Henry ended up living in Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan; near his family, after his service.

good by E Bisard

This is the third card I’ve seen from the collection written by Eliazbeth Lamunion Bisard to her youngest sibling, Belle. It’s difficult to date this card, but Ione may have started school between the ages of 6 and 8, so the card was probably written in December of 1908, 1909 and 1910.

This card was may have been written in 1901, at Easter. Lewis Bisard, son of Elizabeth Laumunion and Franklin Bisard, was living at home with his parents in 1900, according to the 1900 census of Ashland Township, Newaygo County, Michigan.

Sometime before November, 1902, when their daughter Ione was born, he married Sadie E. Miller, probably in Newaygo County. Sadie/Sarah Miller Bisard died in 1914, and was buried in Ashland Center Cemetery.

On the 1920 census of Ashland Township, Newaygo County, Michgian, the family of Charles Miller, 59; and his wife Ida, 58, also lists their granddaughter, Ione Bisard, age 15.
