I received a comment on on on my cemetery posts recently. The writer wondered about the burial of Elzabeth Longstreet. Elizabeth or Elisabeth Laurence, was the wife of Henry Longstreet; they were the parents Harmon Henry Longstreet, second husband of Papa’s ancestor, Susie Melissa Burdick. Her death record on the Seeking Michigan website give the spelling as Elisabeth, but most early census records use the more conventional Elizabeth.

Although I had never heard the cemetery referred to as Dahuff cemetery, the sign said “Dahuff” and “Meauwataka”. A lake just around the corner from the cemetery is “Dahuff Lake”, and some early settlers with the surname Dahuff are buried in the cemetery.

Since Papa and I were already in the area, we scouted around, looking for evidence of her burial. longstreet george

We found a marker on a morning trip, but even high tech manipulation left the image difficult to read.longstreet henry laurence elizabeth cem 1

A trip later in the day revealed that the headstone we found did indeed mark the grave of Henry and Elizabeth Longstreet.

Last week when I was out in New York, I enjoyed a dinner meeting of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society. Why, you ask, would I traipse off to a meeting, when I am not a member, and do not know a soul?

It comes down to the TIGS website. Well, perhaps it is the information they *post* on their website. Click on over there, and take a look at the “Projects” page. Look at the transcriptions done by the Society.

tigs1
There are many, and they are useful. Especially useful is the Rensselaer County Marriage Index, and I found some members of my family in that.

The collective knowledge of the group and their research experience in the area really shine on the “Resources” page. One of special interest to me was the link titled “Troy Genealogy Research Tips”. This was a great place for me to get familiar with the area, and see what was available.

Another great resource is a two page document written by Donna Vaughan, access able from the “Resources” page. Information on how or where to access information on your New York ancestors is clearly described and linked in the document.

I enjoyed the dinner, and was happy to meet an enthusiastic group of genealogists focused on helping other researchers. If I happen to be out that way again on a meeting day, I will be joining them again, it was a great restaurant. My only question, why does the Irish Genealogy Society meet at an Italian restaurant?

Do you know of a genealogy society that is remarkable in some way? Who are they, and what makes them special?

I am posting information gleaned from land records in the areas where our family’s ancestors resided. You can read more about this project in the overview. You may also check my deed record listing, which I will update frequently, but probably not every day. This group pertain to early residents of Wexford County, Michigan with the surname Abbott. Papa’s second great-grandmother was Mary Jane Abbott; I have undertaken a study of the early Abbott deeds to look for connections to her and her family. I know that her brother Erastmus D. [E.D.] Abbott was in Wexford County, but have not connected any others to her at this time.

This is the same land that was sold by Abbott and his wife Laura to Hague on the deed I described yesterday. Both deeds were recorded on October 3, 1879, also. The only thing I can think of is that John Hague wanted the land transferred into his wife’s name exclusively.

Does anyone else out there have any ideas about this set of transactions?

I have surveyed the first two deed index books for transactions with the surname Abbott. When I return to the Wexford County courthouse I will continue through the index books.

This deed was of interest to me as I sort out the men with the surname Abbott who were residents of Wexford County. Our ancestors did not live in a vacuum, and it is possible that some of these men had some relationship to Mary Jane Abbott, wife of George W. Burdick. This land is once again in Colfax Township, Wexford County, and close to where Papa’s ancestors lived. However, we do not know anything about William D. Abbott. The yellow outlined parcel, marked on a part of the old 1889 atlas1, is the one which is described under this deed. The blue outlined area surrounds the location where Papa’s Fenton and Fellows ancestors owned land. The green outline is from the “other” Burdick family, so far we have proven no relationship between our family and them. The red outline surrounds the land patented by John Abbott, another mystery Abbott in Wexford County. Perhaps John and William are related to each other, if not to members of our family.

This land is more in proximity to Papa’s Abbott and Burdick ancestors’ land. On this section of the old 1889 atlas1, the land purchased by John R. Abbott is marked in red. Papa’s Fenton and Fellows ancestors owned land within the blue outlined area, a little later on. Ross P. Fenton was the grandson of Mary Jane Abbott. The land owned by George Washington Burdick and wife Mary Jane Abbott was further north near the township line. The land marked “Geo Burdick” on this map was owned by the “other” Burdick family, with whom I have not found a connection.

Only time will tell if Ezra Abbott has any relationship to our family. Here is the location of the land purchased by Ezra Abbott in 1875, illustrated on a small portion of the old 1889 Wexford County Atlas1, located in the extreme southeastern portion of Wexford County. In 1889 both portions of the land were owned by one individual.

I haven’t researched these Burdicks. This land is in in the portion of the plat of the village of Sherman that is in Springville Township. Wexford, Hanover, Springville and Antioch townships meet on what was the “Newaygo & Northport State Road”. It is difficult to find the exact location of the property described. Adding up the measurements listed on this plat, it looks like the property was either in block 2 or block 3. Today’s descriptions are for entire blocks, since Sherman is thinly populated. Crippen’s Addition is not listed in the State wide subdivision maps.

AKA Wexford county farm, and the Wexford County poor house was located first in Colfax Township, and later in Haring Township.
I am interested in this poorhouse because several of Bill’s ancestors worked there at at different times.

On April 16, 1885 the following notice appeared in the Grand Traverse Herald on page 6 under Wexford County News:

“A county house is being erected on the poor farm in Colfax Township. The main building is 20 x 46 with a front extention (sic) of 14 x 16, all two stories, with a one story wing 18 x 20 in the rear. Rooms for the overseer’s family will be separate from the pauper’s apartments. Twelve dormitories for the later are provided and will furnish ample accommodations for all of Wexford count’s unfortunates. The building is being done my county superintendents under the supervision of A.E. Tilyou, one of their number.”

1910 census of the Wexford County Alms House–name, sex and age only. This is subject to transcription errors. Please consult the census yourself if you find a person of interest.

On this census, a cousin of Papa’s, Maud B. Lamunion, is listed. She was working at the county farm, and possibly boarding there, also.

This group of deeds is for a family with the surname of BURDICK, who lived in Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan. Although these Burdicks may be distantly related to our Burdick ancestors, we have not documented any relationship. You can find out more about the family members here. In this group of deeds, there are no principals such as grantor, grantee, or witness who are also principals in the group of deeds executed by our family. This evidence, along with some vital records helped me conclude that this branch of Burdicks were not closely related to our branch, and did not consider themselves as such.

I found seven deeds under which Harrison and Martha Burdick granted portions of their original purchase to family members. All descriptions are in Section 10, T23N R10W, which is Colfax, Wexford, Michigan.

On 3 October 1877, in St Joseph County, Michigan, a son named Clarence was born to Maryette Potts and her husband Daniel. On 13 January 1909, Clarence Potts, age 21 married in Wexford County Michigan. He was the son of Daniel Potts and Mary Burdick according to the marriage record. Harrison Burdick listed St. Joseph County, Michigan as his home when he purchased this land. Although this is not proof that Maryetta Potts another Burdick daughter, it comes close enough for a non-relative like me.

The lesson I learned from this exercise was that I did not have to pay too much attention to this family as I research our Burdick family in Wexford County. Here is a view from the 1908 Atlas1, showing the land in Section 10. Since John Salisbury’s wife was Almira Burdick, and Maryetta Potts was Maryetta Burdick Potts, the land was still all in the family.
