		 <title>Oakland County Genealogical Society Message</title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090630182107/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
This message is forwarded at the request of our member, Sue Cromwell, from the Farmington Genealogical Society.  Please note that questions should be addressed to the Farmington Society via the e-mail addresses supplied.  OCGS cannot respond to your questions.  Thank you.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Dear Members,&#60;br /&#62;
The Farmington Genealogical Society, The Fox Run Genealogical Society, The Redford Historical &#38;amp; Genealogical Society and the Northville Genealogical Society are excited to present an &#38;#147;Ancestry Day Seminar&#38;#148; on Saturday, August 22nd from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. located at the Fox Run Community in Novi, MI.   We have two outstanding speakers, Lisa Arnold from The Generations Network (Ancestry.com) and Joel Stone, Curator of the Detroit Historical Museum.  There will be four presentations.  The seminar costs only $8.00 per person and this includes a hot buffet lunch.  &#60;br /&#62;
This will be a popular seminar and will be greatly promoted.  Seating will be limited so please register early (hopefully before the middle of July) in order to reserve your spot(s).   The major promotion will begin in the middle of July.   &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Please visit the Farmington Genealogical Society website,  &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mifarmgs/&#34;&#62;http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mifarmgs/&#60;/a&#62; for more information including a flyer, registration form, agenda, and parking information.  The pages are on Adobe.  If you do not have Abode, you can download it for free from the following website, &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.adobe.com/downloads/&#34;&#62;http://www.adobe.com/downloads/&#60;/a&#62;.  To register, please complete a registration and mail the form and a check to the address on the form.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Volunteers&#60;br /&#62;
We are also looking for volunteers for the seminar.  We need volunteers for the registration desk, for seating guests in the auditorium, to direct guests through the facilities, to assist at the parking lot, and some miscellaneous positions.   Please indicate on your registration form if you are willing to volunteer and also let me or Sue Cromwell, &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#71;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x42;&#38;#117;&#38;#103;&#38;#x53;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x65;&#38;#64;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#108;&#38;#46;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x6D;&#34;&#62;&#38;#71;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x42;&#38;#117;&#38;#103;&#38;#x53;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x65;&#38;#64;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#108;&#38;#46;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x6D;&#60;/a&#62; know as well so that we can properly plan for the event.  &#60;br /&#62;
Thank you and hope to see you there.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Oakland County Genealogical Society Message - RE Library of Michigan</title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090624060431/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
This message from Joanne Harvey of the Michigan Genealogical Counsel, contains information about the funding situation at Library of Michigan.&#60;br /&#62;
Fellow Michigan Genealogists:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Library of Michigan continues in suspense.  At a recent staff meeting, the State Librarian, Nancy Robertson, informed the staff that she was applying for the position off Director of the Capital Area District Library in Lansing.  As of 19 June, an appointment for her to be interviewed for this position is scheduled before the first of July.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
At the same staff meeting, the State Librarian informed the staff that Judith Moore, head of the Library of Michigan Foundation, had accepted a position with the University of Michigan in its Development department (ie fund-raising).&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
New hours for the Library of Michigan beginning 7 July have been officially announced.  The Library will be open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Saturday.  This will provide some 6 hours of fewer public services than at present, but it does end the confusion of whether the Library is open Monday and Thursday all day.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Legislature continues work on a budget for the fiscal year 2009-2010 - huge cuts will be made and all avenues of fund-raising explored.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Please contact your legislators and express that your wish that the Library of Michigan remains in its purpose-built building, housing books written by and about Michigan people for over 150 years, plus books published in Michigan.  Emphasize that you are willing to see the Library hours cut very greatly, but that you are NOT willing to see it closed completely and the building emptied, at great cost, for another use. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
 &#60;br /&#62;

OCGS will hold its June meeting next Tuesday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. Sandy Kinter, will present &#38;quot;Researching the Peerages of England and Scotland.&#38;quot;  Ms Kinter has made a project of peerage research, and she will use print and internet resources, helping us to interpret the often-confusing material available.  She will also recommend trustworthy sources and identify those to use with caution.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Oakland County Genealogical Society meets at 7:00 p.m. monthly from October through June on the first Tuesday (except January) at St. Stephen&#38;#146;s Episcopal Church, 5500 North Adams (between Long Lake and Square Lake roads), Troy. The Church has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Meetings are open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
If you missed a chance to get your copy of our new publication, containing tombstone transcriptions of the Perry Mount Park Cemetery, Pontiac Michigan, both CD and printed copies will be available at the meeting! This book has been 7 years in the making, and contains tombstone transcriptions of all cemetery sections.&#60;/p&#62;

		 <title>OCGS message, the Bloomfield Family History Center Seminar, 2009</title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090518084700/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
The Bloomfield Hills Family History Center, 37425 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304-3568 is once again hosting a FREE family history seminar in the fall.  This year's date is October 10, 2009.  The topics, speakers and  registration forms are available on the seminar site:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;a href=&#34;http://fhc2009genealogyseminar.org/&#34;&#62;http://fhc2009genealogyseminar.org/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Here is a direct quote from the site:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;You must pre-register in order to be assured that you can attend the classes that you desire. We will select the appropriate sized room to fit the demand for the class. Without pre-registration we cannot do a decent job of accommodating all the participants. It is essential that you mail us your choices for lectures. We require a first choice and an alternative choice for each hour. The earlier you pre-register, the more likely it is that you will receive your 1st choice lectures. There is no cost for the Genealogy Seminar. It is free. There will, however, be a cost for your lunch, if you order it through us, for the CD, and a fee for materials for the scrapbooking class. Pre-registration and all fees need to be received by us no later than September 15, 2009. &#38;quot;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Now is the time to plan for this Free Event.&#60;/p&#62;

		 <title>Michigan Budget Cuts, Library of Michigan</title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090507144637/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
The Michigan Genealogical Council (MGC) is once again appealing to genealogists to contact their legislators with regard to budget cuts affecting the Library of Michigan, and other libraries in Michigan. An executive order issued and filed with the Michigan Secretary of State on May 5, 2009 lists budget cuts to all Michigan departments. You can read the order, number 2009-22, on the State website. The references to the Library of Michigan are listed on pages 2, 10, 11 and 19.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Michigan Genealogical Council urges everyone to again contact their State Senators and Representatives to express their feelings regarding the Library of Michigan. Under the current extremely difficult economic circumstances, it is quite possible that the Library will be closed, and the collection dispersed to other facilities or put into storage. Even with very limited hours, keeping the collection intact and available in it&#38;#146;s current location is the best outcome.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Michigan Genealogical Council has made a statement on the front page of their website, regarding the extremely difficult circumstances faced by the State.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Oakland County Genealogical Society April &#38; Meeting Reminder </title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090402174116/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
OCGS will hold it's next meeting on April 7, 2009.  The topic  &#38;#147;Bottom of the Lake&#38;#148; will be presented Irv Rabideau.  The presentation describes various research techniques and resources used to trace the crew of a sunken Great Lakes ship. The Lakes provided a livelihood to men and boys from Michigan and&#60;br /&#62;
other areas, but many a family lost loved ones on those sometimes-treacherous waters, some never to be found.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>OCGS and MGC ask for support for the Library of Michigan</title>
		 <link>http://www.warrenweb.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/ocgs/20090310193942/</link>
		 <description>

&#60;p&#62;
Rumors have been swirling for some weeks about the fate of the History Arts and Libraries [HAL] department in the face of revenue decreases and funding issues facing the Country in general and Michigan specifically.  A proposal on the table will dissolve the Department [HAL] in the new budget, resulting in the Library of Michigan, the Archives of Michigan, the Historical Museum and other functions of HAL being divided among other state departments.  The goal is to reduce expenses by reducing departments.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;
You can find out about HAL services on their site, follow this link: [ http://www.michigan.gov/hal/ ]. OCGS believes HAL has served the needs of researchers in the state in multiple ways and is a valuable service.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
Additionally, a budget hearing will be held in Lansing on Thursday, March 12, 2009.

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
According to Joanne Harvey, Research Access Chair for the Michigan Genealogical Council,
&#60;br&#62;
 &#34;There is a rather public rumor that one group is considering closing the Library of Michigan entirely, and emptying the west side of the History, Arts and Libraries building.......The Library's collection might be offered to a &#34;local university,&#34; obviously Michigan State University, which has never had a genealogy collection and is itself facing large cuts. Some form of legal and archival support for the Michigan government must be maintained by law, but its format is debatable. [Format and formation is not defined by law]
&#60;p&#62;
One OCGS member received independent confirmation that a proposal to close the Library and split the collection is on the table.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
We need to let our legislators know how we feel about the Library of Michigan, the services it provides to us, as individuals, and to the genealogical community as well as to our local libraries and other patrons.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;

OCGS asks you to consider:
&#60;ul&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Those who are unemployed use the computers at libraries to do job searches and as many prospective employers have online applications, the availability of computers at libraries is critical for them. &#60;/li&#62;

&#60;li&#62;The databases available through Library of Michigan are well utilized. &#60;/li&#62;

&#60;li&#62;The Abrams Foundation has pumped at least a million dollars into materials for the collection at Library of Michigan. &#60;/li&#62;

&#60;li&#62;The Historical Center, with Library of Michigan, Archives of Michigan and the Historical Museum are a crown jewel for the State of Michigan.&#60;/li&#62;

&#60;li&#62;It is unthinkable to just dump all of this and fragment the collection, or place it in locations with limited access, limited parking.&#60;/li&#62;
&#60;/ul&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
On Thursday, March 12 there is a meeting of the Senate Appropriation Committee to discuss budget issues relating to the future of libraries and the Library of Michigan. You may contact Senator Thomas George by phone at 517-373-2768 to express your support for the Library.  You may visit his web page at:&#60;br&#62;
http://xrl.in/1qrs &#60;br&#62;
for more contact options.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
 Senator George, and contact your local State legislators to express your feelings about the Library and what it means to you. We need everyone to show this is important to us.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
All genealogists need to get into immediate contact with their local Senators and Representatives, emphasizing forcefully that the Library, even downsized severely, needs to be preserved. Make it plain to your legislator that you understand our state's fiscal situation, and that you are amenable to severe cuts, but that the statewide internet, inter-library loan, electronic support, are crucial to Michigan citizens and that you as a taxpayer feel they must be maintained in at least some format.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;
Contact your State representative prior to the Thursday meeting.  Find the information you need to do so here:&#60;br&#62;

Contact your State Senator prior to the Thursday meeting.  Find the information you need to do so here:&#60;br&#62;
