Oakland County Genealogical Society meeting notice

On Tuesday, February 2, 2010 the Oakland County Genealogical Society will host an Open House to allow members and guests the opportunity to get better acquainted, while receiving individual family research assistance from experienced members of the Society. Individual tables will be set up for obtaining assistance on specific localities and ethnic groups. Planned help topics include: Blogging, Eastern European, English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Ontario, French Canadian, U.S. Census, Heritage Societies, and others. Beginners are especially welcome and a Beginners table will also be available. Be sure to bring your research problems or questions that are stunting the growth of your family tree. Please join us for this FREE Help Session! We will meet at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 5500 N. Adams Road in Troy. It is located on the east side of Adams Road about halfway between Long Lake Rd. and Square Lake Rd., where Westview Rd. intersects from the west. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and the public is invited. There is no charge. The church has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking. Happy New Year to the members and friends of the Oakland County Genealogical Society. Oakland County Genealogical Society and Detroit Society for Genealogical Research January Joint Meeting ** Please note the time and location changes ** On Saturday, January 9, 2010 the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, in conjunction with the Oakland County Genealogical Society, is pleased to present a program titled "Detroit and Wayne County - Where are the Records?" Our guest speaker is Ruth McMahon, an accredited Genealogist for 23 years and who specializes in Michigan and Midwest research, will talk about locating and searching records in Wayne County. Please join us for this informative meeting. The meeting will begin at 2:00pm at Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church St. in Bloomfield Hills (from Woodward, take Lone Pine Rd. west to the Church). The church will be open at 1:30pm, so plan to arrive early to enjoy refreshments, browsing, and networking at this OCGS/DSGR joint Saturday meeting. The public is invited, and there is no charge.

The topic will be, Placing your Ancestors in Historical Context: The Civil War. Carolyn Lucado Griffin, teacher, author and longtime active member of the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County Michigan, will discuss how focusing on a major historical event in your ancestor's life can make your genealogy come to life. Gathering records, using social histories, creating chronologies, and then writing about your ancestor will be explained. Remember to bring an item for show and tell. Oakland County Genealogical Society Message

Some Michigan residents, library users, and genealogists rely heavily on resources provided through the Michigan Electronic Library. This vast collection of Electronic resources is available at libraries, and on the internet. Some of the services and databases require a Michigan library card or Michigan Driver's license. Many others do not. A survey is being conducted to assess how to improve or change the Michigan Electronic Library and the Michigan Electronic Catalog. Since many spam catchers will delete e-mail with many links, I have posted the information and the links on my blog. Please take a minute to read my blog post on this and then do one of two things: 1. If you use the Electronic Library or Catalog, take the survey. 2. If you do not use the Electronic Library, the Electronic Catalog or any of the associated services, Check them out, look around, and see what is available. OCGS message -- West Michigan Society Annual Seminar

We are proud and excited to bring a national speaker team to Michigan for a full day seminar in Grand Rapids. Full details are available at www.gotancestors.com. Morgan and Drew Smith, co-hosts of The Genealogy Guys Podcast, are coming to Western Michigan on November 6thand 7th to speak at our 55th Anniversary Conference. Were glad to be coming to Grand Rapids next month, says Drew. George is happy to be returning. He owned a home in Cass County in the 1980s and loves Michigan. I cant wait to see Grand Rapids again! he says. The Western Michigan Genealogical Society is celebrating its 55th anniversary with a banquet on Friday evening, November 6th. George and Drew will be presenting a very special talk for the banquet. The all-day seminar, titled Got Ancestors?! Guydes to Genealogical Research will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at the Prince Conference Center at Calvin College, beginning at 9:00 AM and continuing until 4:30 PM. The Genealogy Guys are well-known genealogical experts, authors, columnists, and popular speakers all over the U.S., in Canada, and in the U.K. The society has selected three of my most popular talks, says George. Bring em back to Life: Developing an Ancestor Profile, addresses creating and using timelines to get past brick walls and to produce biographical outlines for one or more ancestors. Ive used this methodology time after time to help break through genealogical roadblocks, and it really works. He will present a session called The Genealogist as CSI in which he compares genealogical methods with those used by crime scene investigators, such as those shown on the CBS television shows. George is also a master on-site researcher, and he will share his expertise with you in his lecture, Planning a Very Successful Genealogical Research Trip. Drew is a reference librarian at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He also is a recognized expert in the use of technology in family history research. He says of his lecture, The Family History in Your Cells: Using DNA for Genealogical Research, Many people are intimidated by using DNA testing as a research tool. They dont understand the basics and how genetics can be used in our genealogy. My goal in this session is to make it understandable, and to explain how researchers can share test results with one another to help make important family connections. Hell remove the mystery of creating and maintaining a blog in Dear Diary: Today I Made a Great Discovery. And if you want to learn about different genealogical database software programs, hell share up-to-date comparisons of the most popular Windows programs in Kicking the Tires of Popular Genealogy Software. One of the things that Drew and I love doing is recording a free genealogy program each week called The Genealogy Guys Podcast, George says. Weve been recording these for over 4 years and have over 185 episodes available online for people to listen to. Were excited to be recording a LIVE podcast episode at the seminar. Weve done this a number of times at live society events, including the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference in Little Rock earlier this fall, says Drew. Its great to take questions from the people in the audience. They challenge us and we do our best to provide ideas and suggestions for their research. George and Drew are revved up to come to Michigan to share information and to talk with you. The Oakland County Genealogical Society will meet on 6 October 2009 .at 7:00 p.m., at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Tory, MI. State Archivist Mark Harvey will explain how researching the history of a structure relates to genealogical research. Mr. Harvey will also share news on the Seeking Michigan project, which allows researchers to access some records on the project website. A question and answer session will follow the program, allowing everyone to tap the collective experience of the Society members to assist with research problems.
