Stair Project

I promised photos of the completed stairs, and here they are:

These are thumbnails.  You can see that the walls of this house are plaster, a fact we have elected to live with.  I know one lady who actually pulled the plaster out of her house and installed drywall.  I can’t imagine the work doing that,  and the mess that would go with it.  We hang pictures on the stair wall, and it looks fine.

This one shows my feet in a pair of eight or ten year old shoes I am using for this project.  I’ll throw them out when I’m done, they have holes in them in addition to the paint.

For the last two coats on the stair treads I mixed a product called Skid-Tex by Zinzer into the paint. You often see that type of finish on pool decks and porches. It really does prevent slips, and that was my goal.

I had a meeting Wednesday night, and when I came home all the paint was quite dry. I opened the door at the top of the stairs and let the little gray and white “always scared” cat go up. Well, I had to encourage her quite a bit, she had given up. She’s happy now, to have her familiar stomping grounds available to hide in. I’m happy that one step in the project is complete.

I expect the new flooring will be here next week. For now, I am emptying all the shelves in the bedroom so we can move the furniture, paint, and rip out the carpet. It’s really one think after another right now.

I’m more relieved than pleased. I was afraid it would look crappy, but it doesn’t. I guess I win.

They look great! I’m all for anything I can spruce up with paint. I’ll have to give the Skid-Tex a try on my back steps.

If you use it, stir frequently. I would put in in the last coat only, but if you’re only doing one, that’s it. I used 1 quart paint and 1/2 cup skid-tex, and it worked well. But, you have to decide how much to mix up, I don’t think you could store it with the skid tex in it. It’s like walking near a pool, kind of rough, but it serves the purpose.
